How to stand out? What sort of skills and approaches should be acquired to step up the ladder?  A few personal tips from Máté Tuza, Business Intelligence Analyst in ExxonMobil Hungary Kft.

Standing out in ExxonMobil – by the nature of such a multinational environment – has to be multifocal. Speaking from personal experience, all of these are required to varying degrees and they do influence each other. As we work together in a close-knit community many different perspectives and expectations come into play so let’s see some of the best ways to do it.

Keep an open mind

Not all of us have the same expectations and background but that does not necessarily mean one is better than the other. Learn from your peers and keep an eye out for what works for You. If you can embrace some of your peers’ qualities, it will help you to build connections and they can learn to rely on you in the future.

Soft skills

The way you communicate, the way you engage with others, the structure of your sentences and the clarity of your goals. Are you direct in your approach, is it clear what you want to achieve or what you would like others to understand? Emails will be flying by the minute as the main form of communication with other departments, but time passes idly as we wait for clarifications and confirmations. Be sure to hone your soft skills because contrary to its name, these are one of your most important tools.

Digital skills

Times are changing fast and every facet of a corporation, including ExxonMobil Hungary, is impacted by evolving technologies. You do not have to be a coder by any means but understanding and utilizing basic digital skills can definitely get you far in your career. Simple scripts, macros, database queries can be constructed with minimal effort and help you see data with more focus and clarity, boosting efficiency. Applying these have even helped me in cross-functional moves from Finance to Commercial – so these skills are not exclusive to IT.

Collaborative skills

This does not apply solely to projects. Are you stuck on a problem? Do you need some help with something? Can you even identify what is hindering your progress on a certain task? Reach out, get some help and perspective. Many of your colleagues come from different places and backgrounds that can help you see in this situation. Maybe you can approach it from a different angle that is only apparent for someone who is looking at it impartially. Assemble a small team if the challenge persists and drive innovation.

Keep in mind that all of you work for the same company so your goals are all aligned in bringing value to whatever position you occupy. You do not have to do it alone. The more people you are in contact with, the better visibility of achievements you have, which may open up future opportunities.

Work does not have to be a challenge, make it a partnership.
